Saint Peter and a Donor (recto); Saint Thomas (verso)
Historical Context
This companion wing to the Saint Matthias panel depicts Saint Peter with a donor on the recto and Saint Thomas on the verso. Together these panels from the workshop of Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen would have flanked a central devotional image, creating a triptych format standard in early sixteenth-century Netherlandish churches. The donor portraits indicate the work was commissioned by a prosperous Amsterdam family seeking intercessory prayers through their depicted saints.
Technical Analysis
The panel mirrors the technical approach of its companion, with careful oil glazes over a prepared ground. The saints' attributes — Peter's keys, Thomas's square — are rendered with the workshop's characteristic precision and decorative sense.
