Saint Matthias (?) and a Donor (recto); Saint Andrew (verso)
Historical Context
This double-sided panel from the workshop of Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen depicts Saint Matthias with a donor on the recto and Saint Andrew on the verso, dating to around 1520. Van Oostsanen was the leading painter in Amsterdam before the arrival of Jan van Scorel, and his workshop produced numerous altarpiece wings combining saints with donor portraits. The double-sided format indicates this served as a hinged altarpiece wing.
Technical Analysis
The oil-on-panel technique shows the characteristic Amsterdam workshop style with careful attention to costume detail and conventional saintly attributes. The donor figure is rendered with more individualized features than the idealized saint.
