Doge Andrea Gritti by Workshop of Titian

Doge Andrea Gritti

Workshop of Titian·c. 1535

Historical Context

This portrait of Doge Andrea Gritti, produced by Titian's workshop around 1535, depicts one of the most powerful and charismatic leaders of the Venetian Republic (ruled 1523-1538). Gritti was a military hero, diplomat, and patron of arts who transformed Venice's urban landscape. Titian painted the definitive portrait of Gritti now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington; this workshop version attests to the demand for images of the doge among Venetian institutions and collectors.

Technical Analysis

The workshop execution follows Titian's original composition, with the doge's massive form filling the canvas in his ceremonial robes. While competent, the brushwork lacks the master's characteristic bravura touch, with more uniform surface treatment in the fabrics and less psychological penetration.
