Los Apóstoles Simón Judas y Tomás
Historical Context
The Master of the Pacully Collection was an anonymous Spanish painter active in the late fifteenth century, named after a French collection that housed his works. These apostle figures of Simon, Judas, and Thomas from around 1490 likely formed part of an apostolado, a series of the twelve apostles that was a standard feature of Spanish retablos. Such series decorated the upper registers of large altarpiece structures.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel in the Hispano-Flemish style with individualized characterization of each apostle. The figures display the blend of Netherlandish technique and Spanish devotional gravity characteristic of late fifteenth-century Castilian painting.
