Virgin and Child with Saints and Donor
Historical Context
Pietro degli Ingannati painted this Virgin and Child with Saints and Donor around 1505 in Venice. Ingannati was a minor Venetian painter who maintained the devotional conventions of the Bellini workshop. The donor's inclusion personalizes the devotional commission. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Venetian coloring and conventional sacra conversazione arrangement. The donor portrait is integrated with the sacred figures following standard Venetian votive painting conventions.
