Saint Jerome in His Study
Historical Context
Niccolò Antonio Colantonio was the founder of the Neapolitan school of Renaissance painting and the teacher of Antonello da Messina. This Saint Jerome in His Study, painted around 1444 and now in the Museo di Capodimonte, shows Colantonio's remarkable synthesis of Netherlandish and Provençal influences that reached Naples through the Aragonese court. The unusual detail of the lion pulling a thorn from its paw references the Golden Legend account of Jerome's taming of the beast.
Technical Analysis
Colantonio's technique reflects the direct influence of Netherlandish oil painting, particularly Van Eyck, with meticulous rendering of books, objects, and architectural details that transform the saint's study into a convincing interior.
