Delivery of the Franciscan Rule
Historical Context
Niccolò Antonio Colantonio's Delivery of the Franciscan Rule, painted around 1445 for the Museo di Capodimonte, depicts Saint Francis receiving the official rule of his order. Colantonio founded the Neapolitan school of Renaissance painting and trained the great Antonello da Messina. His style synthesized Netherlandish, Provençal, and Catalan influences that reached Naples through the cosmopolitan Aragonese court of Alfonso V.
Technical Analysis
Colantonio's technique reflects his study of Netherlandish oil painting, with precise attention to textures and surfaces, combined with elements from southern French and Spanish traditions that give his work a distinctive character.
