Historical Context
Niccolò Antonio Colantonio's Deposizione (Deposition), painted around 1457 and now in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, is by one of the most significant painters of the Neapolitan school in the mid-fifteenth century — an artist who worked at the Aragonese court of Alfonso V and acted as a crucial bridge between Flemish painting technique and Italian artistic practice in the Kingdom of Naples. Colantonio's documented study of Flemish painting, possibly through direct exposure to works by Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden that the Aragonese court collected, made him one of the first Italian painters to fully absorb the oil technique and naturalistic precision of the Northern tradition.
