Annunciation by Master of the Kaufbeurer Sakristeischrankes

Annunciation

Master of the Kaufbeurer Sakristeischrankes·1490

Historical Context

The Annunciation by the Master of the Kaufbeurer Sakristeischrankes, in the Bavarian State Painting Collections, depicts Gabriel's announcement to Mary with the careful theological attention that this foundational subject demanded. The Kaufbeuren master, working for Swabian church patrons in the 1490s, follows established iconographic conventions — the lily of purity, the dove of the Holy Spirit, the open book or spinning Mary interrupted in her devotion — while bringing local late Gothic formal vocabulary to the arrangement. The Annunciation was required in virtually every altarpiece program as the moment when salvation history began.

Technical Analysis

Gabriel kneels before Mary in an interior or architectural setting, the lily and dove providing standard iconographic markers. The master's late Gothic drapery renders fabric in characteristic angular Swabian folds. Light enters from the left, modeling the figures against an architectural or landscape background.
