Fronleichnamsaltar: Die Eucharistiefeier
Historical Context
Bartholomäus Zeitblom painted this Corpus Christi Altar panel showing the Eucharistic celebration in 1502 in Ulm. Zeitblom was the leading painter of the Ulm school, known for his dignified, somewhat stiff figures rendered in bright, clear colors. The Eucharistic subject was appropriate for an altar dedicated to the feast of Corpus Christi. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Zeitblom's characteristic bright palette and formal figure arrangement. The liturgical scene is rendered with careful attention to ceremonial vestments and ritual objects.
