Historical Context
The Master of the Wendelin Altar painted Saints Sebastian and Margaret for the Aschaffenburg Triptych around 1500. The pairing of the plague saint with a popular female saint followed established altarpiece conventions. This anonymous Franconian master produced competent altar panels for regional churches. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
