Christ on the Mount of Olives
Historical Context
The Master of Saint Severin painted this Christ on the Mount of Olives around 1500 in Cologne. The Agony in the Garden, showing Christ praying while the apostles sleep, was a standard Passion scene. This Cologne master's treatment combines the devotional gravity of the subject with the refined palette of the Cologne school. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
