The Miracle of the Cloud
Pedro Berruguete·1493
Historical Context
This panel depicting the Miracle of the Cloud comes from the Santo Tomás altarpiece and illustrates a scene from the hagiographic tradition surrounding Saint Dominic, in which divine intervention through a cloud or fire validates the saint's preaching against heresy. The miracle narrative reinforced the theological authority of Dominican preaching missions and, by extension, the Inquisitorial activities that Torquemada's patronage promoted. Berruguete brought to this supernatural subject his characteristic blend of Flemish descriptive precision and Italian spatial clarity.
Technical Analysis
The supernatural cloud is rendered as a luminous atmospheric form that descends into the human scene below, creating a visual bridge between the divine and earthly registers of the composition. Berruguete uses the contrast between the warm tones of the gathered figures and the cooler light of the miraculous cloud to organize the painting's tonal structure.
