Portrait of Federico da Montefeltro with His Son Guidobaldo
Pedro Berruguete·1470
Historical Context
Pedro Berruguete's Portrait of Federico da Montefeltro with His Son Guidobaldo, painted around 1470 and now in the Palazzo Ducale, Urbino, is one of the most intimate dynastic portraits of the Italian Renaissance. Federico, shown reading in full armor, is the cultured warrior-duke who made Urbino one of the most refined courts in Italy. His son Guidobaldo stands beside him as the heir to this legacy. Berruguete, a Spanish painter, brought Netherlandish oil technique to the Italian court.
Technical Analysis
Berruguete combines Spanish and Netherlandish precision with Italian spatial composition, rendering the duke's distinctive profile (he lost an eye and part of his nose in a tournament) and the elaborate study interior with meticulous detail.
