Saint Dominic resurrects a Boy
Pedro Berruguete·1493
Historical Context
This Prado panel depicts one of the miracles most central to Dominic's canonization documentation: the resurrection of a young boy killed when a frightened horse threw him near Rome. The miracle was reportedly witnessed by Cardinal Ugolino—later Pope Gregory IX, who canonized Dominic in 1234—lending it formal evidentiary weight in the canonization proceedings that Berruguete's patron Torquemada would have known well. Composing the dramatic moment of supernatural intervention within a gathered crowd of witnesses pushed Berruguete's developing skills for complex figural narrative.
Technical Analysis
The dramatic moment of resurrection is captured through the boy's body at a transitional diagonal angle suggesting the movement from death back to life. The surrounding witnesses are arranged in a measured semicircle that both frames the miracle compositionally and provides structured spatial recession into the background setting.
