Kilchberg altar: John the Baptist by Bartholomäus Zeitblom

Kilchberg altar: John the Baptist

Bartholomäus Zeitblom·1490

Historical Context

The Kilchberg altar — from the village of Kilchberg near Tübingen — is one of Zeitblom's documented altarpiece commissions from around 1490, and the Stuttgart Staatsgalerie holds multiple panels from this ensemble. John the Baptist here appears as part of the altarpiece's sanctoral programme. Kilchberg's patronage of an altarpiece from one of Ulm's leading painters attests to the quality and reach of his workshop's reputation across Swabian Upper Germany. The Baptist's lean, angular form suited Zeitblom's characteristically angular figure style particularly well.

Technical Analysis

Within the Kilchberg altar ensemble, the Baptist panel likely flanked a central devotional image. Zeitblom renders the Baptist's gaunt anatomy with the angular precision he brings to all his figures, the reed cross and wild garment identifying him within a consistent iconographic tradition.
