Lelio Torelli (1489–1578), Jurisconsult at Fano
Domenico Caprioli·1528
Historical Context
Lelio Torelli (1489-1578) was an Italian jurist and statesman who served Cosimo I de' Medici as first secretary and chancellor of Florence, playing a major role in the legal and administrative consolidation of the Medici duchy. His long life spanned the entire formation of the Medici state. This portrait by Domenico Caprioli, a Venetian painter, dates to 1528, when Torelli was in his late thirties and beginning his rise to prominence. Held at the Bowes Museum, it records a significant figure of Cinquecento Italian political history in the precise, clear-eyed manner of Venetian portraiture.
Technical Analysis
The sitter is presented in three-quarter view with the direct, professional bearing of a man of the law. Caprioli's Venetian training gives the flesh tones warmth and tonal depth. Dark costume against a plain ground concentrates attention on the face, whose expression conveys intelligence and administrative authority.
