Virgin and Child
Domenico Caprioli·1515
Historical Context
Domenico Caprioli, a painter active in the Veneto region, created this Virgin and Child around 1515. Working in the tradition of Giovanni Bellini's school, Caprioli produced devotional works that maintained the Bellinesque standard of luminous color and contemplative mood. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates Caprioli's Venetian-trained technique with warm glazes and soft modeling, characteristic of the numerous painters who continued the Bellini workshop tradition into the sixteenth century.
