Virgin and Child enthroned with Sts. Sebastian and Roch
Vincenzo Frediani·1490
Historical Context
Vincenzo Frediani, a painter active in Lucca in the late fifteenth century, created this Virgin and Child enthroned with Saints Sebastian and Roch around 1490. The pairing of the two great plague saints reflects the devastating impact of recurrent epidemics on Italian communities. Lucchese painting of this period maintained distinctive local characteristics while absorbing influences from Florence and other major centers.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with careful attention to the flanking plague saints and their attributes. The composition follows the standard sacra conversazione format rendered in the Lucchese provincial manner.
