The Adoration of the Christ Child
Vincenzo Frediani·c. 1490
Historical Context
Vincenzo Frediani painted this Adoration of the Christ Child around 1490, a devotional work from the artistic culture of Lucca in Tuscany. Frediani was a Lucchese painter influenced by the styles of both Florence and the Lombard traditions that reached Tuscany through commercial and artistic exchange. His devotional paintings served the churches and private patrons of Lucca, a wealthy silk-producing city with its own distinct artistic identity.
Technical Analysis
The tempera on panel demonstrates the careful, refined technique characteristic of Tuscan devotional painting. The landscape setting and the tender treatment of the Christ Child reflect the naturalistic advances of late Quattrocento painting while maintaining the decorative quality valued in devotional images.
