The Cellier Altarpiece
Jean Bellegambe·1511–12
Historical Context
The Cellier Altarpiece by Jean Bellegambe, painted 1511-12, is a major work of early 16th-century Netherlandish devotional art commissioned by the Cellier family for a church in Douai. Bellegambe was the preeminent painter of the Douai region, producing elaborate altarpieces that served the devotional needs of wealthy bourgeois families. The triptych format was the standard form for altarpieces in the Netherlands throughout the 15th and 16th centuries.
Technical Analysis
Bellegambe's oil-on-wood technique combines the jewel-like color and precise detail of the Netherlandish tradition with increasingly Italianate spatial organization. The rich palette and luminous glazes create effects of material splendor appropriate to the altarpiece's liturgical function.
