Death and the Maiden (Baldung)
Hans Baldung Grien·1517
Historical Context
Baldung's Death and the Maiden from around 1517 is one of his most famous explorations of the relationship between Eros and Thanatos. The theme of a young woman embraced by a decaying corpse became one of the most distinctive motifs in German Renaissance art, and Baldung returned to it repeatedly. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters.
Technical Analysis
The shocking contrast between the luminous, living flesh of the maiden and the putrefying body of Death creates a visceral impact, rendered with Baldung's characteristic precision and expressive power.
