Madonna and Child Enthronend
Macrino d'Alba·1493
Historical Context
Macrino d'Alba, the leading painter of the Piedmont region in northwest Italy around 1490-1520, created this enthroned Madonna and Child around 1493. Trained in Rome and influenced by Perugino and the Umbrian school, Macrino brought a distinctive blend of Roman monumentality and Piedmontese character to his altarpieces. His work for churches across the Piedmont established a local Renaissance tradition.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the monumental figure treatment and luminous coloring derived from Macrino's study of Perugino and Roman painting. The enthroned Madonna shows the spatial clarity and dignified proportions characteristic of his style.
