Saint Paul and Saint James the Elder
Cristoforo Caselli·1499
Historical Context
Cristoforo Caselli, a painter from Parma active in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, created these companion panels of Saints Paul and James the Elder around 1499. Working in the artistic sphere between Emilia and Lombardy, Caselli developed a style influenced by Giovanni Bellini during a formative stay in Venice. His altarpiece panels for Parmesan churches show this Venetian-Emilian synthesis.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with warm coloring reflecting Caselli's Venetian training. The paired saints are rendered with dignified naturalism and the luminous palette characteristic of the Bellini school's influence.
