Pentecost
Jorge Afonso·1515
Historical Context
Jorge Afonso painted this Pentecost around 1515 as part of a larger altarpiece cycle. As the most influential Portuguese painter of his generation and inspector of paintings to the crown, Afonso shaped the direction of Portuguese art during the prosperous age of maritime exploration when Lisbon rivaled the great cities of Europe. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The composition shows Afonso's skilled arrangement of the apostles with the descending Holy Spirit, using the rich palette and detailed rendering characteristic of the Luso-Flemish school.
