Der Engel bei der gefangenen hl. Katharina
Historical Context
The Meester van het Altaar van Friedrich's Der Engel bei der gefangenen hl. Katharina (The Angel with the Imprisoned Saint Catherine), painted around 1445 and now in the Belvedere museum in Vienna, depicts a miraculous episode from the life of Catherine of Alexandria — the learned noblewoman who was imprisoned for her Christian faith and received divine comfort from an angel. Catherine was one of the most popular saints in late medieval Europe, venerated as a patron of philosophers, students, and young unmarried women.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and oil on panel. The scene is set within the tower of imprisonment, with Catherine kneeling before the visiting angel. The dungeon interior is rendered with the Austrian Gothic tradition's characteristic attention to architecture as a framing device for the sacred encounter.
