Anbetung der Hl. Drei Könige
Historical Context
The Meester van het Altaar van Friedrich's Anbetung der Hl. Drei Könige (Adoration of the Three Kings), painted around 1445 and now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, is by an anonymous master whose name derives from an altarpiece associated with the Habsburg Emperor Friedrich III. This master worked in the Austrian tradition and his Adoration demonstrates the sophisticated devotional painting being produced for Habsburg imperial patronage in the years before the full arrival of Renaissance influence in the German-speaking lands.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and oil on panel. The Adoration composition follows the Central European late Gothic convention with the three Magi in rich, exotic costumes presenting their gifts before the enthroned Virgin and Child.
