Maria als Tempeljungfrau im Ährenkleid
Meister von Mondsee·1497
Historical Context
The Meister von Mondsee's Maria als Tempeljungfrau im Ährenkleid in the Kunsthistorisches Museum depicts the Virgin Mary as a temple virgin in a robe adorned with ears of grain — the Ährenkleid or wheat-robe — a specifically Austrian Marian devotional image type associating Mary with the harvest, the Eucharistic bread, and the ancient imagery of Ceres transformed into Christian symbolism. The Meister von Mondsee, named for the monastery of Mondsee in Upper Austria, was among the most accomplished painters working in the Salzkammergut region in the 1490s, producing altarpiece programs of considerable sophistication.
Technical Analysis
Mary is shown in the unusual Ährenkleid — a robe decorated with wheat ears — a specifically Austrian iconographic type. The master renders the elaborate pattern of the robe with care while modeling the face with Flemish-influenced warmth. The composition follows the frontal devotional format standard for standing Marian figures.
