Madonna Baglioni by Andrea Previtali

Madonna Baglioni

Andrea Previtali·1512

Historical Context

Andrea Previtali, a Bergamasque painter who studied under Giovanni Bellini in Venice, created this Madonna Baglioni around 1512. Returning to Bergamo after his Venetian training, Previtali became the city's most prominent painter, producing altarpieces and devotional works that brought Bellini's luminous color and spatial serenity to Lombard patronage. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.

Technical Analysis

The panel demonstrates Previtali's refined Bellinesque technique with warm, luminous glazes, gentle atmospheric perspective, and the serene devotional mood characteristic of his mature work.
