Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Jan Provoost·1505
Historical Context
Jan Provoost painted this Saint Catherine of Alexandria around 1505. Catherine's cult was especially strong in the academic and intellectual communities of Bruges. Provoost's depiction of the scholarly saint reflects the refined taste of the late Bruges school. Jan Provoost was a leading Bruges master whose work synthesized Flemish tradition with Italian Renaissance influence encountered through travel. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Provoost's careful Bruges technique and warm palette. The saint's wheel attribute and crown are rendered with the decorative precision characteristic of late Bruges painting.
