Perla di Modena
Raphael·1518
Historical Context
The Perla di Modena (Pearl of Modena), also called the Holy Family with Saints Elizabeth and John, was painted around 1518 by Raphael and his workshop during the artist's final years in Rome. The name reflects its exceptional reputation — King Philip IV of Spain reportedly called a similar Raphael composition the pearl of his collection. The painting depicts the Virgin and Child with the elderly Saint Elizabeth and the young Saint John the Baptist in a warm domestic scene. It is held in the Galleria Estense in Modena.
Technical Analysis
The composition arranges the figures in a compact pyramidal group with strong chiaroscuro that reflects Raphael's late style and its influence on his workshop. The warm, golden tonality and broader brushwork are characteristic of Raphael's Roman period, showing the influence of Venetian coloring. Workshop participation is evident in some passages, though the overall design bears Raphael's unmistakable compositional intelligence.
