Pietà of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon
Enguerrand Quarton·1455
Historical Context
The Pietà of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, painted around 1455 by Enguerrand Quarton and now in the Louvre, is considered the masterpiece of 15th-century French painting. The monumental composition shows the dead Christ across the Virgin's lap, with the kneeling donor, Saints John and Mary Magdalene, and a gold-ground cityscape of Jerusalem. The painting's austere, geometric grandeur and emotional intensity set it apart from all other French painting of the period.
Technical Analysis
Quarton achieves extraordinary monumental power through simplified, geometric forms and the stark contrast of the white Christ against dark mourning figures, with the gold-ground Jerusalem creating an otherworldly setting of timeless gravity.
