Breu, Jörg by Jörg Breu the Younger

Breu, Jörg

Jörg Breu the Younger·1524

Historical Context

Jörg Breu the Younger was the son of Jörg Breu the Elder, one of the leading painters of the Augsburg school, and continued in his father's tradition of large-format altarpiece painting and designs for woodcuts and glass painting. This work, dated 1524 and held in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, documents the Augsburg dynasty's continuity across two generations. Augsburg's painters in the circle of Holbein the Elder, Burgkmair, and Leonhard Beck produced some of the finest German Renaissance work, and the Breu family's transmission of workshop tradition through family succession is significant for understanding how the Augsburg school maintained its identity.

Technical Analysis

The Augsburg style Jörg Breu the Younger inherited emphasizes clear figure modelling, strong draughtsmanship, and a warm but controlled palette. The influence of Holbein the Elder's manner and the elder Breu's achievements would be evident in the firm, deliberate handling.
