Triptych of Calvary

Frei Carlos's Triptych of Calvary represents the most ambitious surviving work by this Portuguese Hieronymite monk-painter. Little is known of Frei Carlos's origins or training, though his highly accomplished style suggests Flemish or German formation before his entry into the monastery of Nossa Senhora de Espinheiro in Évora. This Calvary triptych served the monastery's liturgical needs with a monumental treatment of the Crucifixion flanked by related Passion scenes, demonstrating Frei Carlos's command of figure composition, emotional expressivity, and the rich color harmonies of the northern tradition transplanted to the Iberian peninsula.
