Jesus among the Doctors
Historical Context
Cristóvão de Figueiredo's Jesus Among the Doctors, dated around 1520 and held in the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon, depicts the episode from Luke in which the twelve-year-old Jesus was found in the Temple in Jerusalem, astonishing the scholars with his wisdom. The subject offered painters an opportunity for animated multi-figure composition — a group of learned older men in dialogue with a remarkable child — and carried theological significance as Christ's first public self-revelation of divine knowledge. Figueiredo was one of the major figures in early sixteenth-century Portuguese painting, and this Lisbon holding demonstrates his range across different devotional subjects.
Technical Analysis
The composition arranges the doctors around the young Christ in an informal semicircle or gathered group, their varied postures and expressions conveying surprise, debate, and admiration. Figueiredo's Flemish-influenced Portuguese style brings careful figure rendering to this animated scene.
