Saint Barbara
Historical Context
The Master of Hoogstraeten painted this Saint Barbara around 1505, depicting one of the most popular female saints in the Northern European calendar. Barbara's tower attribute and her association with protection from lightning and sudden death made her cult especially strong in the Low Countries. The panel likely formed part of an altarpiece ensemble. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Antwerp school's detailed technique and clear coloring. The saint's attributes and elegant costume are rendered with the decorative precision characteristic of Southern Netherlandish devotional painting.
