Colonna Madonna
Raphael·1500
Historical Context
The Colonna Madonna, named after the Colonna family who once owned it, is an early Madonna and Child by Raphael dating to around 1507-1508. The painting shows the Virgin seated with the Christ Child on her lap in a gentle landscape, a composition that draws on both Perugino's graceful types and Leonardo's naturalistic innovations. The work is now in the Gemaldegalerie in Berlin. It belongs to the prolific series of small devotional Madonnas Raphael painted during his Florentine years, each subtly varying the arrangement of mother and child.
Technical Analysis
The composition employs a simple pyramidal structure with the Virgin's head at the apex, rendered with the serene clarity characteristic of Raphael's Florentine period. The luminous landscape background with its gently rolling hills and atmospheric distance provides an idyllic setting. The smooth, refined modeling of the flesh tones and the harmonious color scheme of red, blue, and green demonstrate Raphael's unerring sense of chromatic balance.
