Maria mit Kind
Giampietrino·1517
Historical Context
Giampietrino, one of Leonardo da Vinci's most prolific Milanese followers, painted this Maria with Child around 1517. Active in Milan from around 1495 to 1549, Giampietrino specialized in half-length devotional images that popularized Leonardo's figure types and sfumato technique for a broad Milanese audience. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The panel exemplifies the Leonardesque devotional style with soft chiaroscuro modeling, gentle expressions, and the warm tonal palette characteristic of Leonardo's Milanese school.
