Kaisheimer Altar: Darbringung im Tempel
Historical Context
Hans Holbein the Elder painted the Presentation in the Temple for the Kaisheim Altar in 1502. The scene shows the infant Christ being presented to the aged priest Simeon, who recognized the child as the Messiah. Holbein's temple setting demonstrates his command of architectural rendering and spatial perspective. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with detailed architectural perspective of the temple interior. The emotional climax of Simeon receiving the Christ Child is rendered with Holbein's characteristic psychological subtlety.
