Begegnung an der goldenen Pforte
Wolf Traut·1513
Historical Context
Wolf Traut, a Nuremberg painter and woodcut designer who likely trained with Albrecht Dürer, depicted the Meeting at the Golden Gate around 1513. This scene of the joyful reunion of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem was a standard episode in cycles of the Life of the Virgin. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
Traut's panel displays the competent Nuremberg workshop technique with precise drawing and detailed architectural settings, reflecting the strong influence of Dürer's graphic work on his painting style.
