Bernhard Strigel painted this sliding cover for the portrait of Hieronymus II Haller of Kalchreuth around 1503. Portrait covers were protective devices that could also serve decorative or symbolic functions. The Haller family was one of Nuremberg's leading patrician dynasties Bernhard Strigel served as court painter to Emperor Maximilian I, making him among the most sought-after portraitists in the Habsburg world during the early sixteenth century.
