Historical Context
The Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece was the leading Cologne painter of the late fifteenth century, producing altarpieces of extraordinary decorative richness. This Virgin and Child with Saint Anne dates to around 1495 and exemplifies his lavish style characterized by elaborate drapery, jeweled surfaces, and intense coloring. The Anna Selbdritt (Saint Anne with Virgin and Child) was a particularly popular devotional subject in the Rhineland.
