Saint Adrian
Jehan Bellegambe·1514
Historical Context
Jehan Bellegambe painted this Saint Adrian around 1514 for the Louvre. Adrian, a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and was martyred, was popular as a patron of soldiers and butchers in the northern French and Flemish regions where Bellegambe worked. Saint panels were produced across Europe to honor the patron saints of churches, confraternities, and guilds, with each commission specifying the iconographic attributes that would identify the holy figure for the devotional community.
Technical Analysis
The panel presents the military saint with his identifying attributes in Bellegambe's characteristic Franco-Flemish manner, combining Netherlandish precision with the warmer sensibility of the French Douai tradition.
