The Holy Family

Il Sodoma painted this Holy Family around 1511 for the Bavarian State Painting Collections. Sodoma's devotional paintings bring his Leonardesque softness and sensuous figure types to the intimate scale of domestic devotional art. Madonna and Child panels were central to Renaissance workshop production, meeting constant demand from private patrons, confraternities, and churches who required intimate devotional images for personal piety and public display.
