Saint Mary Magdalene
Piero di Cosimo·1490
Historical Context
Piero di Cosimo, one of Florence's most eccentric and original painters, created this image of Saint Mary Magdalene around 1490. Known for his imaginative mythological scenes and unusual compositions, Piero brought a distinctive psychological intensity to religious subjects as well. He trained under Cosimo Rosselli and developed an increasingly personal style that defied easy categorization. Piero di Cosimo was one of the most original and eccentric painters in late fifteenth-century Florence, developing a mythological imagination quite unlike any of his contemporaries.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with rich, warm coloring and Piero's characteristic attention to atmospheric effects. The Magdalene's expression carries the emotional depth and unconventional approach typical of this singular artist.
