John the Baptist
Jan Provoost·1503
Historical Context
Jan Provoost painted this John the Baptist around 1503 in Bruges. The Baptist as a prophet of the wilderness was among the most frequently depicted saints in Netherlandish art. Provoost's treatment maintains the refined standards of the late Bruges school. Jan Provoost was a leading Bruges master whose work synthesized Flemish tradition with Italian Renaissance influence encountered through travel. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Provoost's characteristic Bruges precision and warm palette. The Baptist's traditional attributes of animal skin and pointing gesture are rendered with careful descriptive detail.
