Hl. Familie mit Johannes dem Täufer, Jakobus dem Älterem und zwei Stiftern
Andrea Previtali·1508
Historical Context
Andrea Previtali painted this Holy Family with Saints John the Baptist, James the Elder, and two donors around 1508. The inclusion of donor portraits in a religious composition follows the Venetian votive painting tradition. Previtali's gentle Bellinesque style was well suited to such commissions that combine sacred devotion with personal commemoration. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with warm Venetian coloring and atmospheric landscape background. The donors are integrated into the sacred composition with the scale and positioning conventions of Venetian votive painting.
