Crowning of Mary
Albert Cornelis·1520
Historical Context
Albert Cornelis was a Bruges painter active in the early sixteenth century who contributed to the late flowering of Flemish religious painting before Mannerist tendencies transformed the tradition. This Crowning of Mary, dated 1520 and now at St. James Church, depicts the Virgin's coronation in heaven by the Trinity — one of the most exalted subjects in the devotional canon. The work belongs to the tradition of large-format religious compositions that Bruges painters had produced for churches and confraternities since the Van Eyck era, now filtered through a generation aware of Italian developments.
Technical Analysis
The composition follows a hierarchical vertical arrangement with the Virgin elevated and the Trinity above, surrounded by a celestial court. Colour is rich and carefully balanced, with deep blues and crimsons characteristic of Flemish devotional panel painting.
