Saint Maurice with a Donor
Jean Hey·1490
Historical Context
Jean Hey, also known as the Master of Moulins, painted this devotional panel around 1490 showing Saint Maurice with a kneeling donor. Hey served as court painter to the Bourbon dukes in central France, and his refined Netherlandish-influenced style combined French elegance with Flemish realism. Saint Maurice, a patron of soldiers, was widely venerated in Burgundian territories. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty.
Technical Analysis
