The Deposition
Historical Context
The Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece painted this Deposition around 1509, during his final years as one of Cologne's greatest painters. The removal of Christ's body from the cross was one of the most physically complex scenes in the Passion cycle. This master's ornamental richness elevates the emotional scene into a visual spectacle of devotional art. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master's characteristic jewel-like coloring and extraordinarily detailed surface treatment. The complex arrangement of figures around the cross demonstrates his command of ambitious multi-figure compositions.
